European Centre of Bioinformatics and Genomics

European Centre of Bioinformatics and Genomics

The main objective of the project is development of Polish economy based on knowledge, which will be achieved by equipping the European Centre of Bioinformatics and Genomics (ECBG) with modern unique specialised research equipment. Other specific objectives deriving from the general assumptions of the project are as follows:

-   increase of competitiveness of Polish science

-   development of strategic scientific research as defined by the National Development Strategy

-   improvement of researchers’ qualifications and skills

-   facilitation of transfer of R & D projects results to the economy.

The main objective of the project will be achieved by the expansion and modernisation of ECBG infrastructure – as a result, four new experimental laboratories will be established. They will form an effective research structure getting together necessary resources and enabling the complete cycle of genomics and bioinformatics research in one place, allowing scientists to combine all levels of analysis (structural, functional and proteomic). Fitting ECBG with specialised research equipment, which is to be used both nationwide and on international level, will make possible integration of scientific processes.

Retrofitting and integration of so far dispersed ECBG laboratories will boost the progress of strategic scientific research, as defined by the National Development Strategy. Furthermore, conditions will be created for conducting high-quality scientific research, results of which will be available for practical use in socio-economic dimension.

The applicants within the project planned purchase of hardware and equipment necessary for implementation of the general and specific objectives of the project. They already possess substantial infrastructure (in terms of quarters and apparatus) they use to carry out their current activities. However, lack of resources and dispersal of apparatus between the two centres make it difficult to conduct research of complex problems.
