The Faculty of Agricultural Mechanisation was established on 1 October 1953. It included three units: the Chair of Agricultural Machinery, the Chair of Automobiles and Tractors and the Chair of Automobiles and Tractors Operation. Initially, only bachelor level (BSc in engineering) studies were available. However, in 1959 the first masters of science in mechanical engineering graduated.

The scientific growth of academics and specific nature of conducted scientific research lead to the establishment of new specialisations of training. In 1967 this resulted in the renaming of the Faculty to the Faculty of Machines and Vehicles, comprising ten chairs.

In June 1969 the faculty acquired the right to confer the degree of doctor of technical sciences in the field of construction and operation of machines.

The academic year 1969/1970 brought about changes in the organisational structure of the Faculty from the one based on Chairs to the one of Institutes. The newly established Institute of Working Machines and the Institute of Marine and Railway Diesel Engines (since 1975 - the Institute of Thermal Engineering and Combustion Engines).

On 17 May 1980 the Faculty of Machines and Vehicles gained the right to confer the degree of doctor habilitated of technical sciences.

In 1990, the Faculty obtained consent to establish a new field of study - transport.

The year 1993 saw organisational changes that led to the formation of Institutes of Machines and Motor Vehicles, Combustion Engines and Machine Design as well as the Chair of Thermal Technology.

On 1 November 2000 the faculty adopted a new name of the Faculty of Machines and Transport (in Polish: Wydział Maszyn Roboczych i Transportu - WMRiT).

In 2003, independent the Chair of Basics of Machine Design emanated from the Institute of Combustion Engines and Machine Design, which changed its name to the Institute of Combustion Engines and Transport.
